A GRAND CRU IN ANDALUSIA
From the planting of the vineyards, the selection of varieties, the perfectionism in the winemaking and aging processes in Thessaly, everything has been done to create wines of exceptional quality and style that showed concentration, elegance, complexity, balance, length and nobility as they aged. Ready for immediate consumption but will grow over the next ten years.
Bodega Tesalia, known as “Jewel of the South”, is a passion project by British father and enologist trained daughter, Richard Golding and Natalia, who lived in Spain for decades and fell in love with the extended virgin land at the foothills of the Grazalema range very close to the historic village of Arcos de la Frontera in Cádiz, Andalucia, South of Spain. For centuries, Arcos was a strategic city coveted for its privileged location. Its name dates back to Roman times when it was founded as Arx-Arcis (the fortress in height).
The Tesalia Estate comprises 106 hectares of land, 11 ha of under vines on north-facing slopes, with pruning structures designed to promote aeration and shade on these clay and limestone soils.
Production:
Tesalia is a blend of Tintilla de Rota, Syrah and Petit Verdot, carefully selected at the vineyard and at the table selection in the winery. They come from different plots, all of them facing north-east. Manually harvested at night and vinified separately. Controlled fermentation and maturing in used French oak barrels for 12 months.
Tintilla de Rota is a very local grape in Andalucia, possibly brought there as early as 1000 BC by the Phoenicians. It has been nicknamed “de rota” because it is on the southwest coast of Spain near the town of Rota. Petit Verdot is also a rare grape variety that many producers have found to thrive in southern Spain.
Volume:
13,800 bottles of Tesalia 2016
Tasting Notes:
Full bodied. Tesalia 2015 has a deep ruby color with purple reflections. Aromas that surprise you from the first moment and develop continuously in the glass: spices, ripe red and dark fruits, and cedar joined by delicate lavender and tobacco notes. A rich, concentrated mouthfeel is highlighted by layers of flavors such as plum, figs and blackberries with added impressions of herbs and spices. The wine has well-integrated tannins, balanced freshness, and a flinty minerality that provide exceptional length to the finish.
